Appearance meets durability

How Stamped Concrete Delivers Both Looks and Load Capacity

A decorative finish on a commercial property must do two jobs at once. The plaza or entry needs to look finished and on-brand, but it also carries foot traffic, hand trucks, seasonal weather and years of use. That is why we build the slab on a compacted base with proper drainage and air-entrained mix, then apply the decorative finish on top.

The pattern or colour is what people see and remember, but the foundation underneath is what keeps it intact. Stamped concrete presses texture into the surface for a stone or brick appearance at concrete cost, while stained concrete works colour into the slab so it will not chip or fade like paint.

When the entry, courtyard and storefront approach are all finished in the same pattern and colour, the space reads as one cohesive design. This is the same finishing discipline we bring to polished concrete floors and retail spaces.

The sequence

How Decorative Concrete Gets Finished in Gatineau

  1. Site visit and sample selection

We walk the space in daylight, identify sightlines and foot traffic patterns, then show you stamp patterns or stain colours against the actual site conditions.

  2. Excavate and form the slab

The area is prepped with compacted base and proper slope for drainage, then formed to finished grade like any commercial concrete pour.

  3. Place and finish the concrete

Air-entrained mix is placed and screeded level. While workable, we stamp the pattern or apply stain to the cured surface, depending on your choice.

  4. Cut joints, seal and hand off

Control joints are cut into the pattern to manage movement. The slab is sealed for weather and traffic protection, and you receive a resealing schedule.

Two finishing methods

Choosing Between Stamped and Stained Concrete

Both methods create a finished look that standard concrete cannot match, but they work in different ways. Stamped concrete uses a press to imprint texture into the surface, creating the appearance of brick, flagstone, slate or wood plank. The pattern is visible and tactile, and it costs far less than laying actual stone.

Stained concrete uses acid or water-based dyes to colour the slab from within. The colour is integral to the concrete, not a coating, so it will not peel or chip. You can combine both methods for a surface that has both pattern and colour. We recommend based on the look you want and the traffic the space will see. Both finishes are sealed and maintained the same way as our office and institutional concrete work.

Common questions

Decorative Commercial Concrete Questions, Answered

Durability, traffic, sealing and the difference between stamped and stained finishes.

Yes, when it is built right. The decorative finish goes on top of the same compacted base and air-entrained mix as any working slab, then is sealed, so a stamped plaza or entry takes foot traffic and carts like a standard pour.
Stamped concrete changes the texture and pattern, pressing in brick or stone looks. Stained concrete changes the colour, working dye into the slab. They can be combined, and we recommend based on the look you want.
Stain is worked into the concrete, not coated on top, so it does not chip or peel like paint. Sealed and resealed on schedule, the colour holds up to commercial traffic and weather for years.
Typically every few years, depending on the traffic and exposure. We hand over a resealing schedule at the end of the project so the finish keeps its colour and protection.
Yes. We pick the pattern and colour so the decorative concrete reads as one finished space across the entry, plaza and storefront approach, instead of separate mismatched pours.
