Gatineau Commercial Retaining Walls Built to Spec

Retaining walls on commercial sites carry real load. They hold back soil and water behind parking lots, building foundations and access roads. Gatineau Concrete designs and builds them with engineered footings, reinforcement and drainage systems that work. We also repair walls that are moving or failing. Free written estimate on every project.

  • Footing sized to the surcharge load
  • Rebar and reinforcement to engineered spec
  • Drainage system behind every wall

The foundation of site work

When Retaining Walls Become Structural

A commercial retaining wall is not a decorative edge. It is a load-bearing structure that keeps the site stable. The concrete slab or asphalt parking lot sits on grade that the wall holds back. A building foundation may rest on fill that the wall supports. An access road may be graded up against it.

That load means the wall must be engineered. The footing goes deep enough and wide enough to carry the weight above it plus water pressure. Rebar runs through the wall to resist bending. A drainage layer and perforated pipe behind the wall prevent water from building up and pushing it over.

When a wall is built that way, it stays straight for decades. When it is not, it leans, cracks and threatens the parking or building it holds. That is when parking lot repair or site concrete work becomes urgent. We approach every wall with the same engineering rigor we bring to all commercial concrete.

The build sequence

How a Commercial Retaining Wall Gets Built Right

  1. Site assessment and engineering

We measure the height, slope and surcharge (parking, building, road) above the wall, then engineer the footing depth and width, rebar placement and drainage to handle it.

  2. Excavate and set the footing

The footing trench is dug to frost depth and below, then concrete is poured and cured. The footing is the wall's anchor, so it must be right.

  3. Form and pour the wall, or lay block

For poured walls, forms are set and rebar tied in place, then concrete is placed and finished. For block walls, engineered units are laid and cored with reinforcement.

  4. Install drainage and backfill

A drainage board and perforated weeping tile go in behind the wall before backfill. This keeps water from building pressure and pushing the wall over time.

When walls fail

Fixing Failing Retaining Walls on Commercial Sites

A leaning or bulging retaining wall on a commercial site is not just cosmetic. It is a structural problem that threatens the parking, the building or the access road it holds up. A wall that is moving tells you the footing is settling, the drainage is not working or the reinforcement was undersized.

We diagnose the cause first. Usually it is water pressure building behind the wall because the drainage failed or was never installed. Sometimes the footing was not deep enough for the load. We then decide whether the wall can be stabilised or needs to be rebuilt. A wall that has moved significantly, especially one holding up parking or a building, is usually safer rebuilt to spec than patched. We give you a straight assessment, the same way we handle parking lot repair and site concrete issues.

Common questions

Commercial Retaining Wall Questions, Answered

Engineering, surcharge loads, drainage and repair for commercial retaining walls in Gatineau.

Scale and load. A commercial wall holds back the grade under parking, building pads and access roads, so it carries far heavier surcharge loads and is engineered, footed and reinforced for them, not built to a residential rule of thumb.
Usually, yes, especially for height and surcharge. We build to engineered drawings for the footing, reinforcement and drainage, and can coordinate the engineering as part of the project.
Almost always water pressure or an undersized footing. Without drainage behind it, water builds up and pushes the wall over time. Commercial retaining wall repair addresses that cause, not just the visible lean.
It depends how far it has moved and what it is holding up. A wall caught early can sometimes be stabilised; one that has shifted badly, especially under parking or a building, is safer rebuilt. We give a straight engineering assessment.
Yes. We build cast-in-place poured walls and engineered, cored-and-reinforced block walls. We recommend one based on the height, the load, the site access and the finish the project needs.

★★★★★

Engineered wall holding back the grade under our new parking lot. Footing, rebar and drainage all to the drawings. A year in, dead straight.

Site developer
★★★★★

Our old wall behind the building was bulging. They proved it was a drainage problem and rebuilt it with the footing it should have had.

S. R.
Property manager
★★★★★

They coordinated the wall engineering and built it to spec without us managing it. Tied cleanly into the site grading and parking.

G. K.
Commercial GC
★★★★★

Straight assessment that our leaning wall had moved too far to patch, given it held up the access road. Rebuilt right, no shortcuts.
