Soil Pressure Stops Here: Retaining Walls in Gatineau

Gravity and water work against every retaining wall every day. We engineer them to win, with proper footings, rebar placement and drainage that keeps water from building pressure behind the slab. Whether you need a new wall or one that is already moving, Gatineau Concrete builds it right the first time.

Below the surface

What You See Versus What Holds It: Retaining Wall Anatomy

The face of a retaining wall is only the visible part. The real work happens below grade: a footing that spreads the load, rebar that ties the structure together, and a drainage system that prevents water from accumulating and pushing the wall sideways.

When we pour a wall, we excavate a footing trench, set rebar, form and pour the concrete, then install a drainage layer and weeping tile before backfilling. A block wall follows the same discipline, with cored cells and reinforcement running through the height. Both approaches work because both address the load and the water.

If a wall is already leaning or cracking, wall repair means finding what failed (usually drainage or a weak footing) and fixing it. Sometimes that means stabilising and reinforcing; sometimes it means pouring a new wall right. We also tie walls into patio grading and other residential concrete work on the property.

The sequence

Building a Retaining Wall Step by Step

  1. Site measurement and load analysis

We measure the height, slope, soil type and what sits above the wall, then calculate the footing depth and reinforcement needed for that specific load.

  2. Excavate and set footing

The footing trench is dug to the engineered depth, and concrete is poured to create a stable base that spreads the load into undisturbed soil.

  3. Form, reinforce and pour (or lay block)

For poured walls, forms are set and rebar is tied in place before concrete is placed and finished. For block, cells are cored and reinforced as the wall rises.

  4. Install drainage and backfill

A drainage layer and weeping tile are placed behind the wall to carry water away, then the area is backfilled and graded to shed surface water.

When walls fail

Leaning, Bulging, Cracking: Retaining Wall Repair Fixes the Root Cause

A wall does not fail suddenly. It leans a little, then more. It bulges or cracks. Those are signs that water pressure or a footing problem is winning. Ignoring them means the wall will eventually fail completely. Retaining wall repair stops the cause, not just the symptom.

If we catch it early, we can often stabilise the wall, improve drainage, and reinforce it. If it has moved too far, rebuilding it with the proper footing and drainage is the honest answer. We assess the damage, explain what happened, and tell you whether repair or rebuild makes sense for your property.

Common questions

Retaining Wall Questions Answered

Engineering, drainage, poured versus block, and repair for walls in Gatineau.

The parts you do not see: a footing sized to the height and load, reinforcement tied through the wall, and a drainage layer and weeping tile behind it. A wall built without those leans and fails no matter how good the face looks.
Both work when engineered properly. A poured wall is a single monolithic structure; a block wall offers more finish options. We recommend one based on the height, the site and the look you want.
Almost always water pressure or a footing problem. Without drainage behind it, water builds up and pushes the wall over time. Retaining wall repair addresses that cause, not just the lean.
It depends how far it has moved. A wall caught early can often be stabilised and repaired; one that has shifted badly is safer rebuilt right. We give you a straight answer on the free assessment.
Taller walls and walls that retain a surcharge often do, and may need engineered drawings. We tell you what your wall needs upfront and can handle the permit as part of the project.

Poured a retaining wall to hold back the side yard. They put real drainage and weeping tile behind it. A full year of freeze-thaw and it has not moved a millimetre.

Our old block wall was bulging. They explained it was a drainage problem, rebuilt it properly with the footing it should have had. Solid now.

Block retaining wall that ties into the patio grading. Engineered, cored and reinforced, and the finish matches everything else in the yard.

They were honest that our leaning wall had moved too far to just patch. Rebuilt it right and walked us through why the first one failed.
