Gatineau Retaining Wall Repair Starts with Diagnosis
Water behind the wall is the culprit in nearly every case of leaning, bulging, or shifting concrete. We uncover what is actually happening, fix the drainage path, and rebuild only what needs rebuilding. Some walls stay in place; others require partial reset; occasionally a full replacement is the honest recommendation. Every assessment is free.

Understanding the problem
Why Drainage Repair Stops the Lean
A wall that tilts forward is telling you that water has accumulated behind it. The drainage stone has become clogged with silt, the perforated pipe has cracked or was never installed, or the slope above the wall channels runoff directly into the backfill. Pressure builds, the wall moves, and re-stacking blocks without addressing the water source guarantees the same problem returns within a few years.
Our first step is always to understand what the wall is showing us. Is it leaning, bulging, settling unevenly, or cracking? We then excavate behind the wall to see the actual drainage condition, measure the footing depth, and determine whether the wall itself is salvageable or if it was undersized from the start. The diagnosis drives the repair plan, not the other way around.
This same root-cause approach guides our foundation waterproofing work and our basement crack repair service, where water is again the primary threat to concrete durability.
The repair sequence
How Retaining Wall Repair Gets Done in Gatineau
-
Assess the wall and its movement
We measure the lean angle, check for bulging or settling, inspect visible cracks, and evaluate the slope above. This tells us whether the wall is in early trouble or advanced failure.
-
Excavate and inspect the back face
We dig behind the wall to see the drainage stone condition, check for pipe failure or absence, inspect the footing, and look for any structural damage on the back side of the wall itself.
-
Rebuild the drainage system
Old or clogged stone is removed, new drainage stone is placed against the wall, a new perforated pipe is installed at the base and routed to daylight, and any leaning block sections are reset to plumb.
-
Backfill and monitor performance
The excavation is backfilled with the drainage path intact, the yard is restored, and we monitor the wall after heavy rain or spring melt to confirm the lean has stopped and the drainage is working.
Repair vs replacement
When Replacement Is the Right Call
Repair works when the wall structure is fundamentally sound and the cause (drainage, footing settlement, or minor movement) can be corrected without a full rebuild. It fails when the wall was undersized from day one, when the footing is inadequate across its entire length, or when the lean is so severe that pulling it back would compromise the structure.
On every wall we assess, we tell you which category it falls into. If repair is a temporary fix on a wall that will fail again, our quote recommends a new poured concrete wall or block wall built to code with proper footing and drainage from the start. Honesty about repair versus replacement saves you money in the long run.

Common questions
Retaining Wall Repair Questions, Answered
Leaning walls, drainage rebuild, when to repair vs replace and root-cause diagnosis.
Three contractors quoted to rebuild the wall. Gatineau Concrete diagnosed it as a drainage failure, fixed the drainage, reset two block sections, and the wall has stayed put for two years. Fraction of the rebuild price.
Honest that our wall was past repair and a new one was the right call. Could have charged us for a repair that was going to fail. New wall is bombproof. Trust earned.
Drainage pipe behind our poured wall had collapsed years ago. They excavated, replaced it, monitored the wall through spring. No more bulging. Cause was the answer.
Diagnosis was free and detailed. Showed me exactly what was happening and what the options were. Picked the partial rebuild, exactly as quoted, exactly to schedule.
