Gatineau Basement Walkout Concrete

Opening a basement to daylight and yard access requires engineered grade cuts, retained slopes, exterior steps and drainage that work together. We handle the full concrete scope so the walkout stays dry and usable through freeze-thaw cycles.

The walkout challenge

Why Basement Walkouts Fail Without Proper Planning

A basement walkout is a door at grade level, which means the soil outside must sit lower than the threshold, and water that collects there must have a planned exit. When the grade cut, retaining wall, landing slope and drainage are not coordinated, the result is a threshold that puddles in spring, steps that frost-heave, and a door that no longer closes square. The concrete work is the foundation of the whole retrofit.

Our approach starts with the engineer's drawing and confirms every elevation: where the door sits, where the yard grade ends up, and where water leaves the site. We cut the grade to plan, build the retaining wall (poured concrete or block), pour the landing with proper slope away from the door, set the steps to code rise and run, and tie the drainage to the property system or daylight it with a swale. Each piece depends on the others.

When a walkout is added to an existing basement, the inside slab around the new door opening often needs adjustment too. We coordinate that work with the structural opening so the threshold sits right and water that tracks in does not pool. This often pairs well with our basement waterproofing services while the area is open.

The sequence

How We Execute a Walkout in Gatineau

  1. Confirm elevations from the engineer

We review the structural drawing, stake the door elevation, the finished yard grade, and the drainage low point, then mark the grade cut boundary and landing footprint on site.

  2. Cut and retain the slope

The grade is cut down to the walkout elevation, the upslope side is held with a poured concrete wall or block per the engineer, and the cut area is backfilled with drainage stone behind the retaining.

  3. Form and pour landing and steps

The exterior landing is formed and poured with slope away from the door, the steps are formed and poured to code rise and run, and all surfaces are finished with a grip texture for winter safety.

  4. Connect drainage and test

The drainage outlet at the low point is tied to the property storm system or daylighted, the landing is graded to feed it, and the system is tested with water before the project closes.

The inside-outside connection

Walkout Concrete Extends Into the Basement Floor

The walkout door is not just an outside detail. The threshold has to sit at the right height, the basement slab inside the door opening usually needs a slope correction so tracked-in water does not settle, and the framed wall opening needs proper bearing on the slab. We work with the builder or renovator to get these details right, often pouring or patching the inside slab in the same visit as the exterior work.

This naturally combines with our other basement concrete services. If you are adding a walkout to an existing basement, it is an ideal time to upgrade the crack repair or install interior waterproofing while the area is accessible. We can also assess the existing basement floor and recommend any adjustments needed for the new door opening.

Common questions

Walkout Basement Questions, Answered

Grade cuts, retained slopes, exterior steps, drainage and adding a walkout to an existing basement.

Yes, in many cases. Adding a walkout retrofit means cutting the existing wall to install the door, cutting the grade outside down to threshold elevation, retaining the new slope, and building the exterior landing and steps. The drawings have to confirm the structural side is feasible.
The exterior landing has to slope away from the door, and the lowest point of the cut needs a drainage outlet, either tied to the property storm system or daylighted with an engineered swale. Without it, the walkout becomes a pond every spring.
Not if they are finished with the right texture and built to the right rise and run. We finish exterior walkout steps with a broom finish or other grip texture so they shed snow and stay walkable through the freeze-thaw cycle.
Almost always, yes. The grade cut has to be held somehow on the upslope side. A poured concrete retaining wall is the most common solution; sometimes block. The wall is engineered with the walkout as a single project.
A walkout retrofit on an existing home is typically several weeks, because there is engineering, structural cutting, grade work, retaining, landing, steps and drainage to sequence. The full timeline is in the written quote.

Walkout retrofit done right. Engineered properly, retaining wall poured, landing and steps clean, drainage actually works through spring melt. Basement gets used every weekend now.

New build walkout poured exactly on the engineer's elevations. Door swings perfect, water leaves the landing every storm, steps are solid through winter. Trusted them on the next house too.

They coordinated with our engineer from drawing one. Grade cut, retaining wall, landing, steps, drainage, all one crew, all the same week of pours. No trade pointing fingers.

Honest about how big a retrofit walkout is. Quote was firm, schedule held, drainage was tested before closing. Worth doing once and right; the basement is finally a real room.
