Repair assessment
How Sika Repair Mortars Are Chosen
Sika repair is not one product. MonoTop and SikaRep are product families, each with multiple formulations for different repair scenarios. A structural spall on a load-bearing wall needs a different Sika product than a cosmetic chip on a non-structural surface. Overhead repairs need non-sag chemistry; deep-section repairs need extended working time and controlled shrinkage.
We evaluate the repair location, load condition, depth, and finish requirement, then select the specific Sika product that matches. Using the wrong product in the right location fails as quickly as using the right product in the wrong location. The assessment and product selection are the critical steps.
Sika repair often works alongside Sika waterproofing on wet-zone repairs, and with Sika crack injection when cracks precede the surface repair. See the full Sika product range and our floor system options.
Installation sequence
Sika Repair Installation in Gatineau
-
Assess repair condition
We evaluate the repair location, load-bearing context, depth, and finish requirement to determine whether the repair is structural or cosmetic, horizontal or overhead, and single-lift or multi-lift.
-
Select matched Sika product
Based on the assessment, we select the specific Sika product from the MonoTop or SikaRep family that matches the repair scenario. Wrong product selection is the leading cause of repair failure.
-
Prepare and prime substrate
The repair area is cleaned to Sika spec, unsound concrete removed, and the bonded primer applied to the prepped surface. The primer is what bonds the repair mortar permanently to the existing concrete.
-
Mix, place, and finish
Sika repair mortar is mixed to manufacturer ratios, placed at the engineered thickness, and finished to match the surrounding concrete texture. Cure time is observed per Sika schedule before the area is returned to service.
Common failure mode
Why Product Substitution Fails
The most frequent Sika repair failure we encounter is product substitution. A contractor uses a generic mortar or a different brand in place of the specified Sika product, often because the specified product was harder to source or more expensive. The substitute does not bond to the Sika primer, the chemistry is incompatible, and the repair fails within months.
We use the specified Sika product from start to finish. When a project has multiple repair situations, we use multiple Sika products matched to each scenario rather than forcing one product everywhere. This approach costs more upfront but eliminates the risk of premature failure. Our brand specialty work includes coordination with other Sika systems and alternative repair brands when the project scope requires it.

Sika Repair Questions, Answered
MonoTop vs SikaRep, structural vs cosmetic, overhead repair and warranty.
Structural repair on a parking structure spall. They used Sika MonoTop with the right primer, cured per spec. The repair has carried load for three years with no issues. Real engineering.
Overhead repair on a basement ceiling spall. The non-sag Sika product stayed in place during cure where a standard product would have slumped. Right product for the situation.
Deep-section repair on a structural element. Multiple lifts with the proper Sika product, full cure between each. Restored to engineering spec with documentation.
They were honest that one of our repairs needed the more expensive Sika product, not a substitute. Trust earned by recommending the right product even when cheaper would have worked short-term.
