Protect Your Gatineau Concrete Driveway With the Right Sealer

A properly sealed driveway slab sheds salt, resists freeze-thaw cycles, and holds its finish far longer than bare concrete. Gatineau Concrete matches the sealer to your surface and puts the schedule in writing.

Why the slab needs it

Where an Unsealed Concrete Driveway Loses Ground First

Concrete is not solid through and through, it has a network of fine pores that run right to the surface. In a Gatineau winter, meltwater carrying road salt works into those pores, refreezes overnight, and expands. That expansion is what pops the surface off in small flakes, a process called spalling. Repeat it across fifty freeze-thaw cycles and a slab that looked fine in October looks rough by April.

A penetrating or film-forming sealer closes that pore network before the cycle starts. Salt stays on the surface where it can be rinsed away, water beads off instead of soaking in, and the concrete underneath stays intact. The result is a driveway that holds its texture and colour through winters that would otherwise age it fast.

Sealer selection depends on what the surface actually is. A stamped concrete patio finish and a plain broom-finished slab need different products, and applying the wrong one can cloud the surface or peel within a season. See our concrete types guide for finish-by-finish detail, or check the care and maintenance page for long-term upkeep tips. For driveways that already show surface damage, driveway repair should come before any sealer goes down.

From inspection to handoff

The Four Stages of a Gatineau Driveway Sealing Visit

  1. Surface assessment and finish identification

Before anything else, we look at the slab, finish type, age, existing sealer condition, and any cracks or spalled patches. Cracks get flagged for crack repair before the sealer goes on, because sealing over an open crack does not fix it.

  2. Pressure washing and surface prep

The driveway is washed at a pressure setting matched to the finish, too aggressive on exposed aggregate tears out stone, too light on a brushed slab leaves oil and grime that block adhesion. The concrete then dries fully, which can take several hours depending on conditions.

  3. Sealer application at the correct rate

The right product goes on at the manufacturer's specified coverage rate. Some systems call for a second coat after the first tacks off. Even coverage matters, puddled sealer leaves a milky film; too thin a coat wears through before the next scheduled visit.

  4. Cure period and reseal scheduling

The sealed slab stays off-limits to foot traffic and vehicles for 24 to 48 hours while the product cures. At handoff, we note the next recommended reseal window so the driveway stays protected on a consistent schedule rather than waiting until damage shows.

Reading the signs

When Your Concrete Driveway Sealing Is Due, and What Happens If You Wait

The clearest signal is water behaviour. A sealed slab beads water into round droplets that roll off. When the concrete starts absorbing water instead, leaving a dark wet patch that takes minutes to dry, the sealer has worn through and the surface is exposed again. That is the moment to book a reseal, not after the first spalled patch appears.

Other signs worth noting: salt residue that sticks to the surface after winter rather than rinsing clean, colour that has faded noticeably compared to shaded sections of the slab, and fine surface pitting that was not there a year ago. Each of those points to a slab that is taking on moisture and salt rather than shedding them. Catching it at the pitting stage means a reseal handles it. Waiting until the surface is actively flaking means the job becomes driveway resurfacing instead, which costs more and takes longer.

Decorative finishes need attention on the shorter end of the two-to-three-year range. A exposed aggregate driveway has more surface area exposed to the elements than a flat broom finish, and the stone-cement bond at the surface is what holds the look together. A coloured concrete driveway fades noticeably when the sealer thins out, since the sealer is part of what keeps the pigment looking saturated. Plain brushed concrete is the most forgiving, but it still benefits from a consistent schedule. Use our concrete calculator to estimate coverage for your slab size before calling.

Common questions

Concrete Driveway Sealing, Homeowner Questions Answered

Reseal intervals, product types, finish-specific guidance, and what to watch for across Gatineau winters.

Every two to three years is the standard range. A stamped concrete driveway sits at the shorter end of that window; a plain brushed-finish slab can go a bit longer. The practical test: pour a small amount of water on the surface. If it soaks in rather than beading, the sealer is spent.
Technically yes, but the failure rate on DIY sealing is high. The most common problems are insufficient surface prep, a sealer that does not match the finish type, and uneven application that leaves thin spots. A sealer applied incorrectly can trap moisture under the film and actually speed up surface damage rather than prevent it.
It does, modestly. Most sealers deepen the colour of the concrete, this is most visible on exposed aggregate and coloured concrete driveways, where the finish looks richer and more saturated after sealing. If you prefer a flat, natural look, a matte-finish sealer is available.
Yes, and the order matters. Applying sealer over an open crack fills it temporarily, but the crack continues to move with freeze-thaw and the sealer breaks down at that point quickly. The right sequence is crack repair first, then sealing once the repair has cured.
About 30 days is the standard minimum. Fresh concrete holds a significant amount of moisture that needs to escape before a sealer goes on. Sealing too early traps that moisture, which can cause the sealer to fog, bubble, or fail to bond to the slab surface.

Reseal every couple of years. The driveway looks decades younger than its actual age and we have never had spalling, even after our worst freeze-thaw winters.

They explained which sealer matched our exposed-aggregate driveway. The water beads up properly again and the colour is brighter than it has been in years.

Caught a few small cracks during the seal inspection, repaired them first, then sealed. Honest about what to do in what order, did not push extra work.

Stamped patio resealed on schedule for three years running. The colour and pattern still pop, exactly like the first year.
