The pattern and color are what you see, but the slab is what lasts. We excavate to proper depth, set a compacted base, form the edges, and pour a flat, sloped concrete slab with control joints placed to manage movement. Only after the slab is cured do we apply the stamp, color, and sealer.
This order matters because a beautiful pattern on a poorly-prepared slab will crack and fail. The finish is the last 10 percent of the work. The first 90 percent is getting the concrete right, which is why we treat every decorative walkway like we treat every other concrete sidewalk we pour.

Building a Stamped Walkway Step by Step
Site walk and design choice
We visit the property, discuss pattern options (flagstone, slate, brick, banded borders, exposed aggregate), and layout the walkway path to complement the home's entry and landscape.
Excavate, base, and form
The walkway is excavated to depth, base material is compacted, and forms are set for edges and curves. Color choice (if integral) is confirmed and ordered at this stage.
Pour and stamp the slab
Concrete is poured to a flat plane with proper slope for drainage. Color is applied (integral, broadcast, or topical depending on your choice), and the pattern is stamped into the surface at the right curing window.
Cure, seal, and finish
After the slab cures, a freeze-thaw-rated sealer is applied to protect the color and pattern. The sealer gives the surface its final appearance, from matte to glossy, and the re-seal schedule is included in your quote.

A stamped walkway's color and pattern are only as durable as the sealer protecting them. In Gatineau, freeze-thaw cycles break down inferior sealers quickly, so we use products rated for our climate and we are upfront about the re-seal cycle, typically every 2-3 years, to keep the finish sharp.
We also coordinate decorative walkways with adjacent exposed aggregate patios or matching colored driveways when you want the whole property to read as one design. Samples are brought to site to confirm the match before pouring begins.

Both options exist. Integral color is mixed throughout the slab so chips do not show a different color beneath; topical color (broadcast or stain) is more vibrant but lives on the surface. We recommend integral for high-traffic walks and topical for accents.
The slab itself lasts decades; the pattern and color stay sharp as long as the sealer holds, typically a few years between re-seals in Gatineau. Re-sealing every few years keeps a stamped walkway looking new for the long term.
The underlying slab follows the same rules, control joints in the right places, correct base, correct slope. We hide the joints inside the pattern where possible so cracks land in joints rather than across the design.
