Your Gatineau Slab, Ground Into a Polished Concrete Floor
The concrete already under your feet can become a hard, bright, low-dust surface. Gatineau Concrete tests the slab, grinds it through progressive diamond grits, applies a chemical densifier, and brings it to whatever gloss you want. Free written estimate on every job.
- Hard, dense, low-dust surface
- Satin to high-gloss finish levels
- Free written estimate, firm finish date
Not a coating
The Slab IS the Finish: Polished Concrete Without a Topcoat
Most floor finishes sit on top of the concrete and eventually need replacing. Polished concrete works differently: the grinding process converts the slab surface itself into the finished floor. Diamond tooling removes the weak top layer, a chemical densifier fills the pores and locks the matrix into a harder state, and successive finer grits bring up the reflectivity. Nothing is applied on top that can peel or scratch through.
Gloss level is a straightforward choice. A 400-grit stop produces a soft, matte-adjacent satin that reads as stone. Running the process out to 1500 or 3000 grit produces a mirror-bright surface that bounces light across a room. Both are the same slab, just taken further through the sequence.
Maintenance settles into a simple routine: damp-mop when dirty, re-apply stain guard on a schedule your crew or household can manage. No stripping, no recoating, no grout lines to scrub. For homeowners weighing options, our residential floor systems page lays out all six finishes side by side. If colour is the priority, stained concrete can be combined with a polished finish. Slabs that need levelling first go through self-leveling underlayment before any grinding begins.
How it works
From Raw Slab to Polished Concrete Floor: The Gatineau Process
-
On-site slab assessment
Before any grinding starts, we check moisture readings, map surface cracks or cold joints, and identify any old adhesive or coating that needs removal. The assessment determines whether the slab goes straight to grinding or needs a micro-topping prep layer first.
-
Coarse grind and repair
Heavy diamond tooling opens the surface, removes the weak laitance layer, and exposes the aggregate matrix below. Any minor cracks or voids get filled at this stage so they don't telegraph through the finished polish.
-
Densifier application
A penetrating chemical densifier is worked into the freshly ground concrete. It reacts with the calcium silicate in the slab to form a harder, denser surface that resists abrasion and dramatically reduces dusting.
-
Progressive polish to chosen gloss
We step through finer and finer grits until the floor reaches the satin, semi-gloss, or high-gloss level specified. Stain guard is applied as part of the final pass where the use warrants it, and the floor is handed over ready for foot traffic.
Choosing the right finish
Picking Between Polished Concrete, Epoxy, Stained, and Micro-Topping
Four questions narrow the choice quickly. First: is the slab in good shape? A sound, flat slab is ready to polish directly. A slab with significant surface damage or height variation needs either a micro-topping overlay or self-leveling underlayment before grinding can begin.
Second: do you want colour built into the floor? Stained concrete works pigment into the slab and pairs well with a polished or sealed finish on top. Polished alone reads as the natural grey-to-cream tone of the concrete, which varies by aggregate and mix. Third: how much surface variation and pattern do you want? Epoxy floor coatings offer the widest colour and flake options but sit on top of the slab as a coating layer. Polished concrete shows the slab's own character.
Fourth: what is the long-term maintenance picture? Polished concrete has no coating layer to fail, so the maintenance ceiling is low. Epoxy will eventually need recoating in high-traffic areas. For a full side-by-side, the concrete cost guide covers typical price ranges for each system.

Gatineau Homeowners Ask About Polished Concrete Floors
Straight answers on slab readiness, gloss levels, stain resistance, and long-term care.
Polished the whole main floor after the kitchen reno. The reflectivity makes the whole room look bigger and the maintenance is just a damp mop once a week.
Picked a satin gloss level instead of full high-gloss for the basement. Soft underfoot look, hard as can be, and the kids' toys roll cleanly across it.
They tested the slab first and recommended a micro-topping before polishing because of some surface cracks. Saved us from a polish-over-cracks disaster, exactly the right call.
Stain protector is doing its job. We have spilled coffee and red wine and both wiped up clean. Maintenance is way less than the hardwood we replaced.
