Colour Built Into Stained Concrete Floors
Staining puts colour into the slab itself, not on top of it. Acid and water-based dyes soak into the concrete matrix and create layered, organic tones that become permanent. Gatineau Concrete strips the surface, applies stain in controlled passes, neutralises and seals, then finishes to your gloss preference. Every project includes a free written estimate and firm completion date.

Chemistry, not coating
How Stained Concrete Differs From Paint or Epoxy
Paint sits on top of concrete and peels. Epoxy coats the surface and can chip. Stain penetrates the slab and becomes part of it. Acid stains react chemically with the minerals in the concrete, producing variegated, mottled colour that no two floors will replicate. Water-based stains use pigments that soak deeper for more uniform tone and a wider colour palette.
Once the stain has reacted and cured, it is locked into the concrete matrix. The sealer above it protects the colour from dirt and UV, but the stain itself will not fade, peel or wear away in traffic zones. The character of your slab, its texture and how it took the dye, becomes the finished aesthetic.
Stained concrete pairs beautifully with polished concrete to amplify depth and gloss. For a matte or satin look, a clear sealer alone is enough. If the slab is uneven, self-leveling underlayment brings it into tolerance first. How Stain Gets Applied to Your Gatineau Floor
-
Select stain chemistry and tone
Acid stain produces warm, earthy, variegated colour. Water-based stain offers cooler hues and more uniform coverage. We bring real concrete samples to your home so you see actual colour, not a printed swatch, and confirm the direction before we start.
-
Strip the slab to bare concrete
Any existing sealer, coating or surface contaminant is removed mechanically. The stain must reach bare concrete to react properly. We assess what's on the floor and recommend the stripping method that gets you to a clean substrate.
-
Apply stain in controlled passes
Stain is applied in multiple passes with reaction time between each. Light passes yield soft tone, more passes deepen the colour. We blend and adjust as we go to ensure even coverage and the depth you want across the entire floor.
-
Neutralise, seal and cure
Acid stains are neutralised after reacting; water-based stains rinse clean. A clear protective sealer is applied, and the floor cures to schedule before foot traffic. The sealer protects the colour and can be reapplied every few years to refresh depth.
The strongest finish
Stain Plus Polished Concrete Amplifies Colour
Stained concrete reaches its full potential when paired with polished concrete. The polishing process opens the surface to accept stain more evenly, the densifier locks the colour in chemically, and the polished gloss brings the depth and variegation forward. The result is a floor that reads as a single, unified statement.
If polish is not the right fit for your space, stained concrete finishes beautifully under a clear sealer alone, delivering a matte or satin sheen. Either way, the floor becomes a design anchor that ties the room together. For slabs that need prep work, micro-topping can resurface the concrete, and self-leveling underlayment corrects flatness issues before staining begins.

Acid vs water-based, durability, sealing and combining with polish in Gatineau.
Acid-stained the kitchen floor a warm coppery brown. The colour has variegation that looks like flagstone, no two square feet alike, and zero maintenance to keep it looking that way.
Stain plus polish in our basement. The depth of the colour and the gloss together make it look like a finished commercial floor, way better than the carpet we replaced.
Water-based stain in a cool grey for the sunroom. Even, modern, and the natural light brings out subtle layering you only see at certain angles.
They tested stain colour on a hidden corner first to make sure it would react the way we expected. Smart, and the final result was exactly what the test sample promised.
