How the slab is built
From Template to Sealed Slab: Concrete Countertops in Gatineau
The first thing to understand about a concrete countertop is that nothing about it is stock. The process starts with a site visit where we measure the cabinet run or outdoor base, note where the sink, cooktop or tap holes land, and settle on an edge profile before a single bag of mix is opened.
That template drives everything downstream. For an indoor concrete countertop on a kitchen island or bathroom vanity, the forms are built to those exact dimensions, reinforcement is placed to carry the span, and the concrete is cast and vibrated to eliminate voids. For an outdoor concrete countertop on a grill station or bar, the mix and sealer are chosen for UV exposure and freeze-thaw cycles.
Once the slab has cured, we grind and hone the surface to the finish agreed on at the template visit, then apply a penetrating sealer rated for food contact and heat. The same attention to surface prep and sealing carries through our polished concrete floors and epoxy garage floor work across Gatineau.
Countertops are cast in our shop when size and access allow, or poured in place for large wrap-around runs. Either way, the finished counter arrives level, sealed and ready for use. See our concrete cost guide for a sense of what the project budget looks like before we visit.
The four stages
Casting a Concrete Countertop in Gatineau: Stage by Stage
-
Site template and design sign-off
We visit the space, measure the cabinet run or outdoor base, and record every cut-out location. Edge profile, surface finish and colour are confirmed in writing before we leave.
-
Form construction and reinforcement
Forms are built to the template dimensions. Rebar or fibre reinforcement is placed to carry the counter's span, and cut-out blocks are set precisely so no field trimming is needed at install.
-
Pour, vibrate and cure
The concrete mix is poured into the forms and vibrated to push out air pockets. The slab cures fully, either in our shop or on site, before any grinding begins.
-
Grind, hone, seal and set
The cured surface is ground to the agreed finish, sealed with a penetrating food-safe sealer, then set level on the cabinets or base. Care instructions are left with every install.
Two settings, one material
Where Concrete Countertops Work Best Indoors and Out
Kitchens and bathrooms are the most common indoor applications. A concrete countertop on a kitchen island handles daily prep work, hot pots and spills without complaint once the sealer is in place. A vanity top in a bathroom benefits from the same sealed surface, and the slab can be cast with an integrated basin if the design calls for it. Browse our indoor concrete countertop page for finish and edge options.
Outside, the material earns its keep on grill stations, outdoor bars and covered patio kitchens. The mix proportions and sealer system shift to handle Gatineau winters, UV load and the thermal cycling that comes with a built-in burner. A properly sealed outdoor concrete countertop paired with a well-designed outdoor kitchen holds up through seasons of use without the cracking or fading that cheaper surface materials show.
Both settings share the same starting point: a template visit that locks in the dimensions, so the finished slab drops into place without field cutting. For related surface work around the home, see our stamped concrete patio and decorative walkway pages.

Common questions
Concrete Countertop Questions Gatineau Homeowners Ask
Straight answers on casting, finishes, durability and care for concrete countertops in Gatineau.
Cast a concrete island top with no seam where you would notice one. The edge profile is exactly what we picked and it has shrugged off everything the kitchen throws at it.
Outdoor bar counter for our grill station. Built tougher for the weather, and a full year outside later it still looks the day it was sealed.
They templated the vanity properly so the counter dropped in level first try. Honed finish feels great and the sealer has held up to daily use.
Loved that it was cast to our space, not cut to fit. The cooktop cut-out landed exactly where it should and the colour matches the floor.
